Introduction to the Four Brain Essential Learning Steps (4BELS)ä and Teaching Literacy
The 4BELS is an instructional process that focuses on teaching the way the brain learns best. These instructional strategies create an environment that is emotionally safe, differentiates to every unique brain, and establishes a high quality educational classroom according to the Environmental Rating Scale (ERS). Instructional strategies will be illustrated through teaching literacy with any theme or curricular content topic. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials or curricular content to develop lesson plans.
The Right Brain and The Left Brain
Learn how the “Right Brain” and “Left Brain” influence our perceptions and ability to think. This session will show you how to activate and develop your Right and Left Brain hemispheres. You will be engaged in “Right-Brain” and “Left Brain” activities to better understand how every child learns best. The session will give you effective teaching strategies for the classroom and for professional development staff meetings. You will learn how to strengthen the Right-Brain connection for creativity and insight with the strengths and weaknesses of Left-Brain influence on behavior and the ability to socialize and learn. Insights into learning differences such as Dyslexia, ADHD, and ASD will be discussed in reference to right/left brain dominance.
The Social/Emotional/Cognitive Brain
You will learn how to become aware of and control your emotional, cognitive, and instinctive brain areas. Understand what stress does to our brain. Learn how to strengthen your ability to focus and concentrate. Discuss what provokes violent, instinctive behaviors. Exercise your brain and learn strategies that will help everyone be in control.
Learning-Styles, Multiple Intelligences, and the Brain
This session teaches insight into the learning strategies of an auditory, visual or kinesthetic learner. Discuss Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences and ascertain how to establish and assess intelligence strengths. You will engage in activities that teach curricular topics according to the way your students’ brain learns best. It is important to understand the implications to students when 90% of instruction is auditory but only 10-20% of the population prefers auditory instruction. The 4BELS instructional strategies are the solution to teaching the way every brain learns best.
Parental Involvement and the HUG PAK
Studies show that parental involvement increases student success in the classroom and supports a positive attitude and motivation for learning. The Helping Understand Goals Parent Action Kit (HUG PAK) concept is introduced in this session. The HUG PAK is based on a ‘brain-friendly’ program to engage parents in their child’s classroom curricular content and skill development. There are 4 levels that parents can choose for participation each week. The levels offer basic to more abstract and complex activities to accomplish at home. The HUG PAK is an opportunity for your school to continually inform parents about the educational learning environment you provide as well as giving parents options to reinforce the skills that their children are developing in your classrooms.
Dyslexia Awareness and Accommodations
Over 20% of the population is dyslexic. That translates to one in every five children suffering from this genetic brain difference in the classroom. Most adults are not aware that they are dyslexics even though this is a genetic phenomenon that severely affects their children. This session will discuss the brain differences of the dyslexic child. It will introduce proven instructional strategies that are most effective for literacy awareness and reading instruction in the early childhood classrooms and beyond. Insights into learning differences such as ADHD and ASD will be discussed in connection with brain research information.
Effective Assessment for Every Unique Brain
Authentic and performance based assessment tools are essential in the early childhood classrooms. The 4BELS has an integrated, performance based assessment approach that is user-friendly for teachers. This approach enables teachers to observe and assess the learning style preferences and differences of each child for the purpose of more accurate developmentally appropriate and differentiated instruction. Participants will learn how to create their own rubrics and assessment system that works best for them.
